De-escalating changed behaviours is one of the Commission's named sector risk priorities for 2026–27. It is also where restrictive practices findings usually begin.

When a resident's behaviour changes, the questions an auditor will ask later are simple:

  • What did the behaviour support plan say, and was it followed?
  • Who consented to any restrictive practice, and when was it reviewed?
  • What was tried before medication?

Homes that document the least restrictive option — and review it — rarely have trouble answering. Homes that reach for a PRN first usually do.
